Mobile websites may be something of an unknown for many business owners. They might have just got around to building their regular website. So why spend the time and resources into developing a mobile site? Well, take a second a look at a couple quick facts…
According to Nielsen research, U.S. smartphone adaption has already reached over 40%. This number is growing at an alarming rate.
This doesn’t really mean much on its own. What does matter is that about a third of those with smartphones use their mobile browsers as their primary browser. This means that there could possibly be as much as 15% of your website hits coming from smartphone users viewing your site on their phone.
Mobile sites should be developed specifically to perform well on smartphones. They are much easier for someone who is using a smartphone to navigate your website as well.
Furthermore, consider your internet marketing, social media interaction with your customers, etc. For most businesses or organizations, their website acts as the central “hub” for their online marketing activities. Everything revolves around it. If you’re doing any kind of online marketing these days, you simply can’t ignore your mobile viewers anymore.
However, there are more than a few mobile sites out there now that built terribly, and look the part as well. It’s almost like the early days of web development all over again. Terrible design and terrible user interfaces. Not something most businesses would be proud of nowadays.
Clearstream was recently commissioned to create a QR code / mobile website program for the Anytime Fitness Corporation, a multinational fitness franchise. Franchises are given a QR code that we create. When the QR code is scanned, it directs the user to their mobile site that has content specific to the franchise. Scan the link below to try it. What you will notice is that everything on the site has purpose, and the design is easy on the eyes. Clear layout, easy on the eyes, and crystal clear images. For the user, there is no trying to figure out how to navigate the site. This is very important for mobile users who are on the go. They simply don’t have 5 minutes to figure out your site.
Try to remember a few key points as you are considering developing a mobile site:
- Keep the site simple. Only include what is necessary.
- Use motion graphics and images sparingly. Use them to enhance your content. It keep the site faster, and decreases load times.
- If you are using a CMS for updating your site such as WordPress (most likely you do), make sure that whoever you commission to develop and build the site will integrate with your CMS and standard website. This will make changing out content easier for you down the road.
- Don’t try to fit your entire standard website into your mobile site. Incorporate your most important features and content into your mobile site. Again, smartphone users are on the go. They don’t want to take a couple minutes to find what they are looking for on your site.
Technology is changing at a rapid pace in today’s world. Mobile phones are becoming the epicenter of this shift. So start thinking mobile.
